Facilities Technician

Job Duties:

The Facilities Technician will utilize specialized equipment to repair and maintain complex machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation.  This position will work in various campus buildings.  This position will use and maintain all materials, tools and equipment of trade in a safe and knowledgeable manner.   Employee shift is 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  

 

Key Job Responsibilities: 

  • Utilizes equipment to repair and maintain standard machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation 

  • Performs routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness 

  • Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures 

  • Receives, inspects, inventories, and distributes deliveries to appropriate entities under general supervision 

  • Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed

Department:

The Facilities Management Department is a service unit that reports to the Vice Chancellor of Business, Finance, and Administrative Services and provides many services to the UW-Stout campus including building and grounds maintenance, facility modifications and improvements, custodial services, snow removal, landscaping, campus planning & engineering, construction management, purchasing, fleet services, key management, campus inventory management, campus heat/steam production and chilled water, building openings and closings, event setup and teardown, moving services, trash and recycling collection, etc.? 

 

The mission of Facilities Management is to provide quality service in an efficient, professional manner while being fiscally responsible to ensure campus safety and comfort. Our focus is to continually improve and ensure customer satisfaction.? 

Compensation:

Minimum starting salary of $20/hr, commensurate with qualifications, experience and available budget.  A six-month probationary period is required.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Work experience in building maintenance, 2 years minimum. 
  • Knowledge of building and facilities maintenance methods, practices, and techniques 

  • Analytical skills necessary to diagnose and correct failures in equipment and related systems. 

  • Ability to engage in all job-related customer service interactions and activities with contacts from within and outside the University in a courteous and professional manner. 

  • Ability for timely communication with styles that are approachable and respectable 

  • Engage in active listening 

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and effectively organize work to be productive. 

  • Ability to perform all essential job functions accurately and safely with minimal direct supervision. 

  • Ability to interpret blueprints and schematics 

  • Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license that permits Wisconsin certification to drive University vehicles 

  • Must have sufficient physical flexibility to stoop, crawl under equipment and other low spaces to perform preventive maintenance tasks. 

  • Must be physically able to lift your arms above your head in order to reach equipment 

  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and work at heights above 30 feet to reach equipment. 

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights up to 50 lbs. 

  • Ability to enter, exit, and perform duties in confined spaces occasionally. 

  • Ability to utilize a computer for Microsoft Office programs: Outlook, Excel, and Word 

  • Successful completion of a post-offer employment physical test. 

 

Physical Demands  

Must be able to stand for long periods of time, climb ladders, stoop, crouch, climb stairways, crawl, turn, kneel and balance. 

  • Lifting up to 50lb. objects is required  

  • Breathing masks are required to be worn during some construction duties 

 

Working Conditions and Environment  

 

  • Ability to lift your arms above your head in order to reach high difficult areas.  

  • Ability to perform duties within extreme temperature ranges.  

  • Sufficient manual dexterity with one hand to be able to operate hand and power tools and manually complete paperwork such as recording items on work orders and receiving documents.  

  • Must have sufficient physical flexibility to kneel, squat, stoop, crawl under cabinets and other low spaces in order to perform the tasks required.  

  • Must be able to tolerate working in confined spaces in order to perform the electrical maintenance and repair when necessary.  

  • Employee must be able to work in partially lit spaces, dusty and/or dirty spaces, on raised platforms/ladders and in extreme temperatures on occasion 

  • Employee must wear safety toe shoes during entire shift and is responsible to wear additional PPE as determined necessary by employee/supervisor during the course of job duties
