Dunn County is hiring a Shop Superintendent to oversee the repair, servicing, and preventive maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, rollers, backhoes, loaders, and other highway and construction equipment. This position plans and directs the work of mechanics, welders, low-boy operators, tire and fuel staff, stockroom personnel, and laborers to ensure vehicles, equipment, and Highway Department buildings are properly maintained. The Shop Superintendent also oversees parts, supplies, and inventory, using independent judgment to support diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance planning.

The anticipated starting wage is between $77,189 and $83,200 annually.

 

Primary Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position.  Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Plan daily work and assigns duties according to the abilities of the individuals.
  • Keep records on maintenance of all vehicles and equipment and schedule routine preventive maintenance.
  • Coordinate scheduled maintenance with the needs of highway crews.
  • Advise employees on difficult repair problems.
  • Determine when to repair or replace parts of equipment based on records and estimate of cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop, implement and monitor shop safety procedures. Coordinate worker safety training programs. Ensure shop compliance with Department of Safety and Professional Service (DSPS) and Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) standards.
  • Perform or procure vendors for required inspections of tanks, compressors, lifts, forklifts, and cranes. Coordinate with facilities and vendors for specialized work such as heating, plumbing and electrical
  • Review and evaluate work of shop employees and make recommendations on employee performance; assists the Patrol Superintendent.
  • Check and submit employee time schedules.
  • Maintain records of fuel and oil used by the Highway Department and other vehicles including recreation/parks, sheriff, health care center, government center, and other operations.
  • Write specifications for new equipment needed.
  • Directs maintenance of Highway Department buildings; grounds and shop equipment.
  • Directs the movement of machinery to and from job sites.
  • Directs fuel deliveries to satellite shops and job sites.
  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel; assigns tasks, monitors assignments for completion and effectiveness; establishes scheduling priorities following general policies.
  • Schedule and direct work for night mechanic and maintenance men.
  • Direct stockroom operation, parts ordering, and inventory.
  • Check all new machinery purchases to see if equipment meets specifications.
  • Research and design special equipment to fit Highway Department's needs.
  • Identify opportunities to standardize equipment and components to minimize inventory and maximize the training and familiarity of technicians.
  • Understands and operates standard and computerized testing/diagnostic equipment; may weld, machine, or fabricate equipment and accessories.
  • Orders parts, fuel, and supplies; keeps records of parts inventory; maintains accurate records of work performed; assists in developing specifications for new equipment.
  • Responsible for calling out crews to do emergency work on state and county highways.
  • Arranges training and addresses safety issues as observed or reported; conducts periodic training for staff. 
  • Follows safe work practices.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Vocational/technical training in automotive and diesel equipment maintenance/repair with six (6) to nine (9) years of fleet management, equipment, fabrication & maintenance/repair experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities  

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and an acceptable driving record. Endorsements are not required for the position, but candidate must be willing to obtain endorsement(s) at the discretion of the department to perform the job duties as requested.
  • Prior to hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted.  Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS

  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and industry safety requirements and practices in the workplace.
  • Considerable knowledge of the performance characteristics and maintenance requirements of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of county operations to handle emergencies.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to keep and maintain repair and labor records.
  • Ability to operate and maintain the computer.
  • Skill in the use of tools of the mechanic’s trade.
  • Ability to diagnose defects in trucks, automotive, or construction equipment accompanied by a strong mechanical and problem-solving aptitude.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches, specifications, and diagrams.
  • Ability to maintain work records.
  • Ability to operate a truck, automotive and heavy equipment, and diagnostic machines for same.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform relatively heavy manual work when required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships.
  • Ability to follow Dunn County policies and procedures including those of confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize job assignments.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, manage multiple projects, and complete work within established deadlines.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position, significant overtime, and off hours.
  • Must be available for periodic call-ins during emergent situations.

MINIMUM LANGUAGE SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with other staff members, supervisors, and the general public in written and verbal form. 
  • English skills (oral, written and comprehension) sufficient to effectively communicate with all internal and external customers.

MINIMUM REASONING ABILITY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages.
