The Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts is proud to present the classical ballet, Coppelia, performed by the Continental Ballet Company on February 16 at 7:30pm. Coppelia is a light-hearted, comical ballet that focuses on the story of two young lovers (Swanhilda and Franz) and a magical doll-maker, Dr. Coppelius. Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 for seniors and students. An optional pre-show Princess Tea Party is available for purchase and includes pastries, beverages and a photo with the dancers. The Princess Tea Party is $10.
The Continental Ballet Company made its debut at the Mabel in December with The Nutcracker, which sold out six weeks prior to the show and was enthusiastically received by the community.
Coppelia was developed in 1870 and set to beautiful music by Leo Delibes. The original choreographer, Arthur St Leon, incorporated folk dance into the ballet in efforts to reflect the common people of the time. This beautiful ballet is full of youthful characters and behaviors, and is very entertaining.
The Continental Ballet Company was established by Riet Velthuisen in 1988 and has been performing classical plays for over 20 years in the Twin Cities. Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Paquita, Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Coppelia are all classical plays that have been performed by the Continental Ballet Company. Previous comments from past ballet audience members include, “the most spectacular performance I’ve seen” and “I’ve seen some good ballet before but this was exceptional.” Velthuisen will be directing Coppelia, which will include lead roles from Yuki Tokuda, Casey Juul, and John Munger.
Tickets for The Continental Ballet Company’s Coppelia performance can be purchased by calling the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts Box Office at 715-235-0001; visiting the Mabel Tainter during Box Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM; or the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts website at www.mabeltainter.org.
