Before there were bridges on the Chippewa River ferries carried traffic from one shore to the other. From about 1840, when the Europeans began settling permanently along the river, until 1964 ferries provided service at various places on the river. Though the quaint old boats have been replaced with bridges some of the history and stories have been preserved by the presenter Jim Alf, one of the ferrymen, in his book “When the Ferries Still Ran.” Jim will have books for sale.
